Here is a situation; your child has been failing his/her Maths for the past one, two, three, four or even five years. That is right, the whole of primary school or even Secondary School.
Being the concerned and caring parent that you are, you realise you MUST do your part to seek for help – sometimes even desperately – for tuition for your child who has been failing Maths in the attempt of improving his Math Grades before the next exam.
You go to the nearest tuition centre beside your home or the mall nearby to find out the fees and the class schedule and sign your child up straight away.
Does this all sound too familiar?
You have successfully enrolled your child into a tuition centre and believe that it is a burden off your shoulders. You pray, hope and, even wish for a miracle to happen so that your child’s Maths in his next exam will see some improvement – now just an improvement and not even hoping for an ‘A’.
Now, let us just take a minute and relook at what you have done, shall we?
Your child, who has been failing Maths, for as long as you can remember, is now enrolled in a tuition centre of your particular choosing. You have spent hours, even weeks looking for the ‘right’ tuition centre. Now that is great, if your child is scoring 75-85 marks and just need more revision and drilling with worksheets. We know that is not the case.
Imagine this scenario:
Let us say your child is taking his PSLE this year, therefore, he is enrolled in a Primary 6 Level Tuition Class.
What is taught during a typical Primary 6 level tuition class?
Yes, you are right; obviously Primary 6 topics/syllabus.
Now, have you ever wondered why the years of past tuition have not helped your child improve his grades?
Here is the answer!
It is because he/she is attending Tuition. Yes, you read this right. It is because of Typical Tuition Classes.
Allow me to break this down further.
If your child has been failing or doing badly for Maths, it is because he does not have a solid and strong understanding of concepts that were taught to him by his teacher in the past. This goes to say that he is lacking in understanding of concepts of PAST topics – it could be past topics one, two, three or even four years ago.
Do you now see where the problem actually lies now?
How does your Primary 6 child attending Primary 6 tuition class teaching Primary 6 topics solve this problem?
Instead of solving it, 70-80% of the time, it creates more confusion in the already lost child. It is like pushing your child who can’t swim into a pool and putting on more loads so he sinks to the bottom of the pool quicker.
Now, if you are ready to finally step out and take your child out of this vicious cycle that has gone on for as long as you can remember, here is what I need you to do…
1) Bring along your child’s recent Exam papers & Report book
2) If your child’s recent Exam paper has been returned to school, request it from the teacher.
3) Make a copy of the exam paper so we can analyse it and the original can be returned to school.
Alternatively, you can snap photos of the paper and email it to firstname.lastname@example.org .
See you soon!
